Background and production details

For my third video during my stay in Reeth in the Yorkshire Dales in March 2017 I wanted to film a walk in Swaledale I had done with friends some years ago, which started in the village of Muker to follow one side of the River Swale as far as Keld then returning to Muker along the opposite side of the river. Unfortunately on the morning of Wednesday 29th March I woke up to see rain from the window of my room in the Buck Hotel. It was as forecast so I had no right to moan, so I just came up with a plan B, which was simply to go out anyway and make it up as I go along depending on the weather. Therefore, rather than doing my planned walk I could just make it a tour of Swaledale without needing to walk too far if the rain was persistent. I decided to still feature Muker and Keld, but also include Gunnerside as well as the Tan Hill Inn at the end.

I arrived in Gunnerside later that morning, parked up, walked around the village and, despite the rain still coming down, captured some really nice shots. From here I drove onto Muker and filmed that village. The rain had died off a little when I was here, so I decided to film a few shots along the start of the walk I was originally planning to do, which was to follow the path from the village signposted to Keld and Gunnerside. I didn’t walk far along here, so happy with the shots I had captured I returned to my car and drove on to Keld. I parked roadside near Keld Lodge and walked down into the village from there. The rain came down quiet heavily at this time, but I still managed to film all around Keld without getting too wet. I chose to end the day’s filming at this point as it was getting pretty wet now, but I just needed to get the last few shots of the day, and that was at the Tan Hill Inn. The rain stopped by the time I reached this famous inn but it was very windy. That just added the right atmosphere for me though, so I got some fantastic shots all around here before ending the day of filming and enjoying a quick half inside the Tan Hill Inn.

As this was the last of the three films in a row filmed in the Yorkshire Dales during March 2017 I wanted a different soundtrack to the previous two, both of which featured different instrumental versions of my song “Insecure About You”, so for “Meadows of Muker” I decided to go for something completely new. I came up initially with a soft piano theme for the Gunnerside scenes, which developed into a more stringy sound later on. For the Tan Hill scenes I wanted a slightly more dramatic sound for the scene where I approach the inn, so I used a “synchoir” voice from my keyboard, but used part of the same theme I had been recording throughout the film.
