Background and production details

For the fourth day of my September 2014 holiday I planned to visit  Upper Wharfedale  to make my next film in the  Yorkshire Dales . It was about an hours’ drive from where I was staying in  Hawes  to the first location, which was the B6160 Blackstones Lane just above the White Lion Inn at  Cray . From here I took my first shot of the day as I filmed several takes of a spectacular panning view down into Upper Wharfedale near the village of  Buckden .

Driving down into the dale itself I parked my car in Buckden and walked for a about a mile along Dubb’s Lane to the nearby secluded village of  Hubberholme . I managed to capture a few shots of Hubberholme before a party of school kids arrived in a minibus, so my timing was perfect! Rather than retracing my steps along Dubb’s Lane I followed a section of the  Dales Way  to Buckden, which ran beside the  River Wharfe . I took several shots along the footpath and filmed myself talking about my song “Insecure about You”, more of which I will talk about in the last paragraph. Reaching Buckden again I took a few shots of the village itself before returning to my car to move on to the next location.

Kettlewell  was my next port of call which, as I mention in the finished film, is a personal favourite Yorkshire Dales village and it was very easy for me to capture many scenic shots of this lovely spot. My final location was the small market town of  Grassington  where I spent approximately an hour filming the last scenes of the day.

Reviewing the footage later on there was a suitable amount to create one complete short film of “The Solitary Rambler” to cover Upper Wharfedale, which I would entitle “Wonders of Wharfedale”. For the previous two films I had recorded instrumental pieces of my song “Insecure About You”, but for "Wharfedale" I would record a piece with me singing the lyrics. Now even though the music was composed to represent the Dales, the lyrics were written about something completely different. As a result, whilst I was walking the short section of the Dales Way, I decided to film myself talking about how I originally composed the song and the lyrics I wrote. I spoke a line to introduce the song into the film, so that once the tune is heard viewers will hopefully not find it strange to suddenly hear lyrics that have nothing to do with what they are watching!
